Now! Bracket First Round: Detroit Region

April 28, 2013

Here is the first round for the Detroit Region in the Now! Bracket.  Check out The Jones Corner for the New Orleans and Seattle regions’ first round results.

5 seed: Now 34 vs. 12 seed: Now 40
Now 34

Starting Five

Baby-Justin Bieber feat. Ludacris

Rude Boy-Rihanna

Your Love Is My Drug-Ke$ha

OMG-Usher feat.

Imma Be-Black Eyed Peas

One and Dones

Nothin on You-B.o.B. feat Bruno Mars

Just a Kiss-Lady Antebellum

One and Dones

Lighters-Bad Meets Evil feat. Bruno Mars

Pumped Up Kicks-Foster the People

Now 34 features some of the biggest songs by some of the biggest stars of the past few years.  At the time of this writing, “Baby” has over 800 million views on YouTube.  Add songs by Rihanna, Ke$ha, and the Black Eyed Peas and you have some star power, regardless of what your opinion may be of the various musicians involved.  Now 40 has some good songs, but as a whole they aren’t as immediately recognizable as the songs on Now 34.  This 5-12 matchup is a close one, but Now 34 moves on.

Now 40: Moving Home Like Jagger
Now 34: Imma Be Advancing

6 seed: Now 4 vs. 11 seed: Now 12

Now 4

Starting Five

(You Drive Me) Crazy-Britney Spears

Air Force Ones-Nelly

Jenny from the Block-Jennifer Lopez

Miss You-Aaliyah

One and Dones

Blowin’ Me Up (With Her Love)-JC Chasez

Now 12 features some solid hip hop songs, and it also has the one song from *NSYNC member JC Chasez’ solo career, which is a solid one and done.  However, Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears and blink-182 are all very strong, not to mention that the two one and dones on this album are two of the most recognizable one hit wonders of the 90’s.  Now 4 moves ahead easily.

Now 12: Got Bump, Bump, Bumped
Now 4: Virginia, Meet the Second Round

7 seed: Now 7 vs. 10 seed: Now 20

Now 7

Starting Five

Let Me Blow Ya Mind-Eve feat. Gwen Stefani

Survivor-Destiny’s Child

Now 20

Behind These Hazel Eyes-Kelly Clarkson

Don’t Cha-Pussycat Dolls

Sugar, We’re Goin Down-Fall Out Boy

One and Dones

I Think They Like Me-Dem Franchize Boyz

You & Me-Lifehouse

Now 20 has a few songs that I still enjoy listening to (“Beverly Hills,” “You & Me,” and “Sugar, We’re Goin Down” in particular, but the rest of the lineup hasn’t aged very well.  On the other had, Now 7 still holds up very well in my opinion.  The one and dones still provide enjoyable listening experiences, while the strength of Destiny’s Child, *NSYNC, Nelly, Eve and Janet Jackson in the starting five is very tough to overcome.  Now 7 will be moving on to the next round.

Now 20: Sugar, You’re Goin Down
Now 7: Survivin’

8 seed: Now 44 vs. 9 seed: Now 46

Now 44

Starting Five

Good Time-Owl City & Carly Rae Jepsen

Whistle-Flo Rida

As Long As You Love Me-Justin Bieber

Wide Awake-Katy Perry

One More Night-Maroon 5

One and Dones

Gangnam Style-Psy

Starting Five

Locked Out of Heaven-Bruno Mars

Carry On-Fun

Suit & Tie-Justin Timberlake feat. Jay-Z

I Knew You Were Trouble-Taylor Swift

Just Give Me a Reason-Pink

One and Dones

Little Talks-Of Monsters and Men

This is a matchup of some of the most recent albums available in the tournament.  Because that is the case, we don’t really know what the impact of these songs will be.  However, I can say Now 44 has one of the most successful one and dones of the last 10 years, in addition to some star power with Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, and Maroon 5.  Despite that, the strength of the songs on Now 46 along with the name recognition of the stars of the album is too much for Now 44 to overcome.  Now 46 will advance to the next round.

Now 44: Not a Good Time
Now 46: Carrying On

Now that the first round is decided, let’s see how the second round will shape up.

1 seed: Now 5 vs. 9 seed: Now 46
2 seed: Now 6 vs. 7 seed: Now 7
3 seed: Now 24 vs. 6 seed: Now 4
4 seed: Now 9 vs. 5 seed: Now 34

Stay tuned next week for the second round matchups.
