Now Bracket First Round: Nashville Region

April 28, 2013

As I said Sunday, I am doing a bracket of all the Now albums.  You can see how the bracket breaks down here.  Also, as I said, I will be handling the duties for two regions in the first round, and friend of the blog Jason Jordan will be handling the other two regions on his blog The Jones Corner.  I will be posting the “Starting Five” for every album along with a few “One and Dones.” (A band can appear multiple times under “one and done” depending on if those were their only few memorable songs).  Then I will give my thoughts on the overall matchup and why the winner won and the loser lost followed by a final score that will be somewhat nonsensical (Winners will be in bold & italics). So, without further ado, here are the first round matchups for the Nashville Region.

5 seed: Now 39 vs. 12 seed: Now 18

Now 39

Starting Five

Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)-Katy Perry

Good Life-OneRepublic

Till the World Ends-Britney Spears

The Lazy Song-Bruno Mars

The Edge of Glory-Lady Gaga

One and Dones

Party Rock Anthem-LMFAO

The Show Goes On-Lupe Fiasco

Price Tag-Jessie J feat. B.o.B.

Starting Five

Drop It Like It’s Hot-Snoop Dogg feat. Pharrell

Used to Love U-John Legend

Collide-Howie Day

Over and Over-Nelly feat. Tim McGraw

One and Dones

Now 18 does have some solid songs, but none are really career-defining other than “Collide.”  “Vertigo” is past-prime U2, and while “Over and Over” and “Drop It Like It’s Hot” would be on the Greatest Hits albums for both Nelly and Snoop Dogg, I don’t think they are the first songs people think of when they think of either musician.  Something Now 39 has going for it is four of the starting five songs are hits in the musicians’ primes.  I’m sure fans of Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, OneRepublic or Bruno Mars could argue that any one of the songs on this album are the best songs any of them have ever made. The depth on this album is another thing it has going for it.  Love it or hate it, “Party Rock Anthem” was one of the biggest songs of the past few years while “Price Tag” and “The Show Goes On” were both very popular songs.  As much as I enjoy some of the songs from Now 18, I think Now 39 wins this one going away.

Now 18: Hot, But Dropped
Now 39: Glory’s Edge

6 seed: Now 21 vs. 11 seed: Now 36

Starting Five

Unwritten-Natasha Bedingfield

Dirty Little Secret-All-American Rejects

Because of You-Kelly Clarkson

My Humps-Black Eyed Peas

One and Dones

Lean Wit It, Rock Wit It-Dem Franchize Boyz

Honky Tonk Badonkadonk-Trace Adkins

Now 36

Starting Five

DJ Got Us Fallin In Love-Usher feat. Pitbull

Just a Dream-Nelly

Teenage Dream-Katy Perry

Dynamite-Taio Cruz

Misery-Maroon 5

One and Dones

King of Anything-Sara Bareilles

Now 21 is a kind of love it or hate it lineup.  Any of the choices that feature Nickelback are going to be that way.  But you can’t deny the popularity/presence of many of the songs featured.  A positive for this one is the variety of genres present.  You have country, hip hop, rap, pop, and rock present which is an impressive group.  Now 36 features some quality songs that are as popular as anything those musicians have produced.  This matchup is closer than a 6 vs. 11 matchup would appear to be on paper, but Now 21 is going to take the game.  There was no way an album with two songs about lady lumps was going to lose in the first round.

Now 36: Keep Dreaming
Now 21: Honkytonk Humps

7 seed: Now 43 vs. 10 Seed: Now 33

Now 43

Starting Five

Let’s Go-Calvin Harris feat. Ne-Yo

Lights-Ellie Goulding

Part of Me-Katy Perry

Payphone-Maroon 5

Boyfriend-Justin Bieber

One and Dones

Call Me Maybe-Carly Rae Jepsen

Starting Five

Need You Now-Lady Antebellum

Tik Tok-Kesha

Bad Romance-Lady Gaga

Fireflies-Owl City

Hey, Soul Sister-Train

One and Dones

Whataya Want From Me-Adam Lambert

BedRock-Young Money feat. Lloyd

Now 43 has one of the best (read: most recognizable) one and dones of any of the albums in this tournament.  It also features some of the biggest names presently in music with Katy Perry, Justin Bieber and Maroon 5.  However, Now 33 features songs that launched Ke$ha and Lady Antebellum into prominence, while also featuring Train’s resurrection & Lady Gaga’s (arguably) most popular song.  In the first upset of the region, I have Now 33 taking down Now 43 to advance to the next round.

Now 43: Phone Home
Now 33: Clock Keeps Tik-ing

8 seed: Now 2 vs. 9 seed: Now 3

Starting Five

Baby One More Time-Britney Spears

What I Got-Sublime

Take Me There-Mya, Blackstreet & Mase

Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)-Jay-Z

I’ll Never Break Your Heart-Backstreet Boys

One and Dones

Closing Time-Semisonic

Starting Five

The Rockafeller Skank-Fatboy Slim

Bailamos-Enrique Iglesias

All I Have to Give-Backstreet Boys

What’s My Age Again-blink-182

American Woman-Lenny Kravitz

One and Dones

All-Star-Smash Mouth

Man, the fact that this is a matchup of 8 and 9 seeds is incredible.  These may have the actual best one and cones in the competition.  You have arguably the definitive Britney Spears song in play (along with the music video that made a generation of men collectively hit puberty).  You have Backstreet Boys on both albums.  You have two rap/hip-hop songs with musical phrases from things that are very much kid friendly sources (Annie & Rugrats).  Just a brutal first round matchup.  I originally had Now 2 advancing, but I reconsidered, and Now 3 will take the matchup by a narrow margin.

Now 2: Closing Time
Now 3: All-Star Advancing

So, the first round of the Nashville region is complete.  The winners advance, and the losers are out.  Here is what the 2nd round will look like.

1 seed: Now 8 vs. 8 seed: Now 3
2 seed: Now 22 vs. 10 seed: Now 33
3 seed: Now 16 vs. 6 seed: Now 21
4 seed: Now 23 vs. 5 seed: Now 39
